Toshiba - A Brief History
Toshiba was formed through the merger of two Japanese companies:
In 1875 Hisahige Tanaka (1799 - 1881), established Tanaka Seizo-sho (Tanaka Engineering Works), and became Japan's first manufacturer of telegraphic equipment. Tanaka was well known for his early inventions which included amongst others mechanical dolls and a perpetual clock. His company under the name Shibaura Seisaku-sho (Shibaura Engineering Works), became one of Japans largest manufacturers of heavy electrical apparatus.
In 1890 a company called Hakunetsu-sha & Co. Ltd was established and became Japan's first plant for the manufacture of electric incandescent lamps. The company evolved into a leading manufacturer of consumer electrical products. In 1899 this company was renamed Tokyo Denki (Tokyo Electric Co.).
In 1939, these two companies who were both market leaders in their fields, merged and formed an integrated electric equipment manufacturer called, Tokyo Shibaura Denki (Tokyo Shibaura Electrical Co. Ltd). The company soon became well known as Toshiba and this became its official name in 1978
